Peterbald Breed History

The Peterbald is a striking and elegant breed that originated in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1994. It was created by Russian felinologist and cat show Judge.Olga S. Mironova, who crossed a Don Sphynx (also known as Donskoy) male named Afinogen Myth with an Oriental Shorthair female named Radma von Jagerhof, a World Champion. This experimental pairing produced a new breed with a dominant hair-loss gene and the refined body type of Oriental cats.

The first litters included four foundational Peterbalds:
Mandarin iz Murino, Muscat iz Murino, Nezhenka iz Murino, and Nocturne iz Murino — cats that would go on to define the breed’s elegant silhouette and affectionate temperament. All peterbald's can trace their pedigrees back to these original cats.

Peterbalds are known for their:

  • Slender, muscular build
  • Wedge-shaped head with large, low-set ears
  • Long, whip-like tail
  • Unique coat types: ranging from bald to velour, brush, or straight
  • Highly social, intelligent, and people-oriented nature

Their coat can change over time, especially in the first two years, making each Peterbald’s appearance uniquely dynamic.

Parent Breeds

The Peterbald was a cross between the Don Sphynx or Donskoy and an Oriental Shorthair.

Donskoy (Don Sphynx)

The Donskoy is a Russian breed whose history starts in the city of Rostov-on-Don, Russia. They are a very elegant and sweet cat. These beautiful hairless cats remind you of extraterrestrials coming from the outer universe. Their appearance is characterized by magic harmony and their wrinkles give them an extraordinary old and wizened look. Due to their hairless nature, these cats require regular grooming.

Their sweet temper and curious nature has captured the hearts of cat lovers across the world.

Oriental

The Oriental Shorthair is a member of the Siamese Breed Group which includes the Oriental Longhair, Siamese and Balinese. They all share the same body type, however what makes the Oriental Shorthair distinct from the rest of the Siamese group is their wide array of colors combined with a short sleek coat. They are very social and talkative and thrive within the company of other people.
